Next Gen Xbox Wish List: Hardware and Games

Xbox-Next-Logo

Finally, the time is almost here. After years of rumors about ‘always online’, Kinect integration and impressive processing power, Microsoft will unveil their next gen console in 10 days, on May 21st 2013. What does the future have in store for us? Below you will find a wish list for the hardware side, as well as games that would be great to see on the system.

Next Xbox Hardware Wish List

Xbox-Logo-Bullet-PointImproved power and graphical capabilities, obviously. The difference should be big enough to warrant a new generation of hardware, and provide a futureproof console. It should be able to keep up with the PlayStation 4, so multiplatform games will be easy to port or developed simultaneously, and won’t suffer from clunky porting.

Xbox-Logo-Bullet-PointThe console itself needs to be a lot less noisy and more durable. No more RROD-like debacles, it has to be reliable. I would prefer it to be smaller as well, something like the Wii or slightly bigger, but that’s probably too much to ask given the fact that it’s relatively new technology. An aesthetically pleasing design would be welcome, at least. It would be nice to get rid of the monstrous power adaptor as well.

Xbox-Logo-Bullet-PointImproved controller: functional d-pad, rechargeable out of the box, more durable. It also needs to be easier to sync controllers to the console. The Xbox 360 controller is great in general, so they could use that as their base to make an even better one.

Xbox-Logo-Bullet-PointFor game storage Blu-Ray, or another large capacity medium. The advantage of Blu-Ray, aside from the size, is that they are very scratch resistant as opposed to dvds.

Xbox-Logo-Bullet-PointBigger HDD (200GB at least, but I would like to see 1TB or more.) Especially when it uses a disc based format and you have the option to install your games, or if they want to offer more games as digital downloads, as this eats up a lot of space.

Xbox-Logo-Bullet-PointFree online. Microsoft could mimic Sony in this area: free for a basic membership, which includes online play, and a paid membership that offers a lot more value than it does right now.

Xbox-Logo-Bullet-PointAchievements and Gamerscore of Xbox 360 and Next combined, but also viewable separately. In other words, you can see someone’s total (both Xbox 360 and Next Xbox score), but you can also choose to view just Xbox 360 or just Xbox Next. This keeps things organized.

Next Xbox Games Wish List

It’s nice to think about the system itself, but what is most important in the end, is the library of games that are available for it. What titles would be great to see? Here is a list.

Condemned 3

 Condemned-3

The first two Condemned games were a refreshing mix between survival horror and first person action. They were high on atmosphere and tension. The improved graphical capabilities of the the new Xbox could enhance this even more, and the fighting system could become more sophisticated and realistic. Just take out the unnecessary multiplayer that made it’s debut in the second game.

Burnout

 Burnout

With Criterion Studios working on Need for Speed titles, it’s been a long time since we saw a new Burnout game. The launch of a next gen system could be a great time to revive the series. More processing power could for example lead to more interactivity with the world, and the idea to not only see your car fly to bits, but also everything it crashes into, is interesting already.

Alan Wake 2

Alan-Wake

This game has been rumored to be in development for the next Xbox for quite some time now, and it wouldn’t be a bad idea at all. Build on what made the first game great, use the power of the system to provide lighting effects that are meaningful to the gameplay (since you fought enemies using light), and give us another engaging story, and this should be good.

Ryse

Ryse

This seems pretty likely and rumors have indicated for a while now that the game has been moved to the next Xbox. If the console indeed comes with an improved Kinect camera, this could be the game that finally proves the device can really add something to a gaming experience that is worth it for everyone. The concept has always sounded good at least: kicking and hacking your way through ancient Rome is never a bad thing.

RARE title (Perfect Dark, Banjo Kazooie, Killer Instinct)

Kameo

Just… anything worthwhile from RARE. This used to be one of the top developers in the past, and now they have been reduced to close to nothing. Some people claim all the talent has left already, but I just hold out hope. Come on, Microsoft. You have the studio, you have the IPs, you have the money. Use it!

Dead or Alive 6

Dead-or-Alive-6

With the Xbox and Xbox 360, Dead or Alive 3 and 4 respectively were titles that showed off the graphical capabilities of the new systems. Aside from that, they were great fighting games. The next Xbox should follow that tradition and have a new, beautiful looking installment in the series close to release.

Mirror’s Edge 2

Mirrors-Edge

Rumors about the sequel to the much appreciated first person game from 2008 have been steadily popping up, but no official word yet. The first one was only moderately successful, so for a publisher this is not a great incentive. Let’s hope EA will take the risk anyway. Mirror’s Edge wasn’t a perfect game, but it certainly was something special and original.

Gears of War

Gears-of-War

One could argue that the Gears of War series has seen its best days, and it’s time to put it to rest, but we could be proven wrong if the franchise gets reinvented on Microsoft’s next gen system. It would be a big name with an already large fanbase, so for a new console that could prove very helpful.

Halo 5

Halo-Forward-Unto-Dawn

Halo is the flagship franchise of the Xbox brand, putting Microsoft’s first console firmly on the map, and being one of the last big exclusives to launch on the Xbox 360. Since Halo 4, the series has been taken over from Bungie by 343 Studios, and we already know that two more games are planned right now. It’s not rocket science to conclude that Microsoft will bring the series to their next console. What will a new installment bring to the series? More impressive locations, consisting of space ships and strange planets? Open battles, with vehicles, on an even larger scale? Improved AI? Time will tell.

Five games that could put the Wii U back on the map

The Wii U has had a pretty rough start. Right now it’s facing one of the worst droughts in the history of Nintendo’s consoles, and sales aren’t up to expectations. Luckily for Wii U owners there is a lot on the horizon. Here are five (announced and unannounced) titles that could give the system a much needed injection of fun.

The Legend of Zelda

Legend-of-Zelda-Hylian-ShieldA Zelda game is a given, but we will probably have to wait a while for this one. When Nintendo unveiled The Wind Waker HD, they declared it was to tide us over until the next new Zelda game arrives. We got a taste of what it could look like with the E3 2011 tech demo, but the graphical style is still undecided. In any case, needless to say this is one to look forward to.

3D Mario platformer

Super-Mario-Fire-FlowerNintendo confirmed a new 3D Mario platformer will be playable at E3 2013. After Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, which were some of the best games of this generation, this should be interesting indeed. Hopefully Nintendo can make another game of similar quality, possibly using the unique features of the Wii U gamepad. What items will return, and what new ones will be introduced?

Donkey Kong Country Returns 2

Donkey-Kong-BananasThe previous DKCR was a welcome surprise on the Wii, and we can assume Nintendo didn’t revive the series for just one game. Retro Studios proved other studios than Rare can make great installments in the series, so that shouldn’t be a cause for worry. Sidescrolling, banana collecting jungle gameplay in HD? Yes, please.

Metroid

MetroidThis can be similar to the Prime series, or something entirely new, as long as it retains the atmosphere and exploration of unknown planets and deep space stations that made the Gamecube installments so memorable. The gamepad can be used for mechanics like scanning the environment or suit upgrades.

Super Smash Bros

Super-Smash-Brothers-LogoThis is one of those series that doesn’t have to innovate much, in fact, changing too much would probably result in fans being upset. They should just use this new installment (confirmed to be at E3 2013 in the shape of at least some screens) to finetune the existing mechanics further and build on what has made the games so popular. Also, of course we should expect new characters, items and environments, from new games as well as classics.

PlayStation 4 Wish List: The Games

With the (presumably) imminent announcement of the PlayStation 4, it’s time to look at some of the games that would be great to see on Sony’s new console. Most of these titles, if they were to be announced, shouldn’t be expected in the console’s launch window, but somewhere during its lifetime.

Uncharted 4

Uncharted

This is a no brainer. Looking at what Naughty Dog was already able to achieve with the PlayStation 3 hardware, it’s exciting to think what they can pull off with a drastically better console. This game could be a great showcase for the new hardware. Naughty Dog is known to develop new IPs every gen, so the future of Uncharted isn’t entirely certain with the shift to a new console.

Onimusha

Onimusha

The Onimusha series saw four installments on the PlayStation 2, and none on its successor. It is time to revive this atmospheric feudal Japan hack and slasher, and it should be done in style. Think Resident Evil 4, and how it approached the series. Unfortunately, Capcom has stated there are currently no plans to revive the series. Still, never say never.

Final Fantasy 15

Final-Fantasy-15

The Agni’s Philosophy demo gave us a taste of what a next gen Final Fantasy game could look like. Just imagine how a turn based fight with summons and magic moves could be with visuals like those. The battle system from Final Fantasy 13 was generally well received, even by those who didn’t like the rest of the game, so they could expand on that.

Metal Gear solid

Metal-Gear-PS4

Though not necessarily exclusive, the Metal Gear series has often been the showcase of PlayStation hardware. The series often pushes new boundaries and is among the best looking games of that generation. We already know the Fox Engine is scalable to next gen hardware, so it will be interesting to see what the already impressive engine can do on PlayStation 4.

Ratchet & Clank

Ratchet-&-Clank

This is a series that has steadily evolved with each new installment. There have never been huge changes in the core mechanics, but since they’re pretty unique games to begin with, this can be forgiven. Not to mention the fact that they are a lot of fun.

resident evil 7

Resident-Evil

After the mixed reviews Resident Evil 6 received, Capcom is going to look at what they can do with the series, and what the next step will be. There’s even the possibility of a reboot, bringing the series closer to its roots in the survival horror genre again. Chances are that this new installment one will be for the next generation consoles, since development usually takes pretty long. All this makes it hard to predict what to expect from it, but this also makes me curious about it.

DEVIL MAY CRY 5

Devil-May-Cry

A while ago Capcom stated that fans shouldn’t rule out Devil May Cry 5. It’s possible that after they break they had with Ninja Theory’s reboot, which has sold below expectations so far, this one returns to be a more traditional entry in the series. And what better moment to make a comeback than on fresh new hardware?

The Last Guardian / Final Fantasy Versus 13 / Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes

These are ambitious games that would probably benefit from being moved to PlayStation 4. The Last Guardian and Final Fantasy Versus 13 have both been delayed so many times, they may as well be moved to the next generation, and profit from the enhanced power. Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes has actually been rumored to be a next generation title, and since the FoxEngine is scalable to next gen, this does make a lot of sense.

Something brand new

While it’s great to see familiar franchises evolve on new hardware, there should also be room for completely new games. Here’s hoping Sony will surprise with something unexpected and promising.

PlayStation 4 Wish List: The Console

February 1st – the gaming scene was turned upside down by a small teaser Sony released.

It is widely assumed, that in less than three weeks, on February 20th, Sony will share the first details of their next generation console, the PlayStation 4. Though most of the games will probably be saved for E3, the hype is very high. Here’s my wish list of what I’d like of the hardware for Sony’s next system:

Improved power

This is a no-brainer, but should still be mentioned. The next PlayStation should be a significant step up in terms of power, making releasing a successor worth the effort. Not only would it enhance the graphics of the games, but it would also give developers more options and thus more creative freedom.

Probability: Very high – If all the rumored specs are any indication, power won’t be an issue.

PlayStation-Square

Easier to program for

The PS3 was apparently quite difficult for developers to program for. The PS4 should fix that. Rumors are that Sony will be using off the shelf hardware. The fact that studios like Kojima Productions and Square Enix have already made new engines that should make development a lot easier, helps as well.

Probability: High – Recent rumors have pointed in this direction, and it seems logical Sony will do what they can to make it happen to prevent inferior multiplatform games in the future.

PlayStation-Circle

Evolved DualShock

Sony will probably keep the controllers largely the same, since they are so intertwined with the identity of the PlayStation. But there are some small adjustments that could be made to improve the controller. Most importantly, better secondary shoulder buttons (trigger shape).

Probability: High – With PlayStation 3 Sony tried a completely new controller design, but never went through with it. It’s likely they will keep the DualShock’s basic design, but add some new functions and improvements. Rumors indicate touchpad functionality on the front and the rear.

PlayStation-Cross

Large HDD

With the rise of DLC and full digital download games, as well as optional installs for your retail titles, it’s nice to have a large chunk of space on your console that doesn’t run out too quickly.

Probability: Very high – Hard drives have grown larger and cheaper the past few years, so it’s only logical the new consoles will be able to store a lot more data. Hopefully the PlayStation 4 will contain at least 500GB of storage.

PlayStation-Triangle

Faster Blu-Ray

Putting Blu-Ray technology in the PS3 gave Sony an edge over the competition in terms of storage space, and gave players a good Blu-Ray movie player at the same time. So I’m very glad they made this decision, but the downside was the slow reading speed of the device. This resulted in the necessity to install many of the games to the HDD, a lengthy process.

Probability: High – Blu-Ray is becoming more and more of a standard, so Sony will keep this format for the next generation. A faster drive would be very welcome, and will most likely be the case.

PlayStation-Logo

Reliability

If you are going to shell out a few hundred dollars and be one of the early adopters of a new piece of technology, it’s always nice if you can rely on some form of stability. Of course, technology comes with problems, and there always will be, but if Sony can keep them at a minimum, that would be greatly appreciated.

Probability: High – Technology will never be infallible, but for console manufacturers a high failure rate is expensive and causes negative publicity. For this reason, it can be assumed Sony will do everything to ensure the new machines will be high quality and reliable.

Backwards compatibility

Backwards compatibility on consoles is always a great thing – being able to keep playing the entire PlayStation 3 library on your PlayStation 4 would be very convenient. PlayStation 2 was backwards compatible with the PlayStation, and the early PlayStation 3 models were compatible with both PlayStation and PlayStation 2, but in later hardware releases the functionality was removed. Hopefully Sony will include it with at least the early models of their new console.

Probability: Somewhat likely – It can be a good selling point, especially around launch, and if PlayStation 4 uses Blu-Ray it shouldn’t be difficult to do from a technical standpoint. The only question is whether Sony will have to keep production costs low – especially if they’re planning to launch a powerful console at a attractive price. This one has a 50/50 chance I’d say.

PlayStation

The excitement for Sony’s incoming announcement is there – now let’s see if they can deliver. In any case, February 20th can’t come soon enough!

Three Surprising Plot Twists of 2012

A good plot twist is always an effective way to keep the player interested in the story. When something happens that you didn’t predict at all – but still makes sense in retrospect – it’s always a memorable part of the experience. Here are three plot twists from games released in 2012 that stuck with me.

Of course, the text below contains heavy spoilers (for Assassin’s Creed III, Resident Evil Revelations and Binary Domain), so read at your own risk.

Haytham is… - Assassin’s Creed III

Assassin's-Creed-3-You-Are-a-Templar

In order to prevent getting spoiled on a game’s surprises, I always tend to avoid watching a lot of trailers or reading too much information before I play the game. When I started playing Assassin’s Creed III, I didn’t even know the first part of the game had you controlling another character, Haytham. The game starts in London, were you perform your first assassination. After that you leave for America and you arrive on the New Frontier. At some point I thought I had figured it out: Haytham was an English assassin who was going to become Connor’s father. Makes sense.

A bit later in the game Haytham recruits a new member into the organization. They go through a small initiation ritual, and Haytham holds a speech. And then he says…

You are a templar.

I never saw this coming at all, for hours I thought I had been controlling an assassin.

The truth behind Faye Lee - Binary Domain

Binary-Domain-Fay-Lee-Plot-Twist

Binary Domain takes place in the future. Androids (human like robots) have become so advanced that the governments of the world decided to prohibit research and development of robots that cannot be distinguished from humans. However, one of the biggest robot manufacturers in the world seems to be breaking this rule. You play as a member of a squad team sent to bring Amada, the leader of this company, in.

One of the soldiers you team up with during the game is the female sniper Faye Lee. At some point in the game she is captured by Amada. The protagonist wants to go rescue her, but the rest of his squad explains to him they have made a discovery. She is not an ordinary human being, but a hybrid between robot and human. Her mother was an incredibly advanced android, so she is the child of a robot mother and a human father, which, according to the official rules, makes her an enemy.

This is not the Queen Zenobia - Resident Evil Revelations

Resident-Evil-Revelations-Queen-Semiramis

A large part of this Resident Evil game takes place on an eerie ship called the Queen Zenobia. Two teams (Jill and Parker, and Chris and Jessica) are on the ship at the same time, and you control them subsequently. At one point in the game, Jill and Parker have gotten themselves in a dangerous situation: stuck in a room that’s filling up with water. The other team starts a search for them, but when they arrive at the scene, they find no one. It turns out that they are on an entirely different ship called the Queen Semaramis, and all this time you have unknowingly been on two identical ships.

Let’s roll: comparing four Nintendo pinball games

Pinball games, most people will probably turn up their nose at them, but in fact they can be really fun. Like puzzle games, I prefer to play them on handhelds, so that’s what all my pinball games are for. Here I give my thoughts on the four pinball games I played extensively enough to say something about them: Kirby’s Pinball Land on the Game Boy, Pokemon Pinball: Ruby and Sapphire and Super Mario Ball on the Game Boy Advance and Metroid Prime Pinball on the Nintendo DS. As you can see, all of them are spin-offs of big Nintendo franchises, but which of these is the best?

Super Mario Ball Mario-Pinball-Rating

From a graphical standpoint Super Mario Ball looks fantastic, with bright and impressive 3D visuals. The game’s concept had great potential. A pinball game in the Mario universe, with Koopas, stars, Bowser… anything that makes a Mario game a Mario game. What could go wrong? Well, the main problem is that the gameplay just isn’t what you expect and want from a pinball game. You play on a network of small, connected boards, which sounds like an interesting concept, but the boards are so small that you just don’t feel like you’re in control, and every time you drop the ball to another board, the board you fell from resets, wiping out all your hard work. It should have been more like a traditional pinball game, with larger boards and less emphasis on collecting stars and more on getting a highscore. If the entire board didn’t reset if you fell, it would have been a lot less frustrating.

Another big issue, is that Mario Ball has the single most horrific save system I have ever encountered in a game. And that’s not an exaggeration. What happens? When you load your savefile, the game deletes it. The idea is, that you save it again when you decide to quit. But this is so illogical that I didn’t expect it all, until I found out the hard way. When you play a bit and don’t make any progress, and you decide to just shut off your system without saving (as there is no reason to), you can say goodbye to your entire savefile. To this day it’s a complete mystery to me why the developers decided this would be a good idea, but I have one theory: maybe the game was just so demanding of the GBA hardware, that they chose to do this in order to save memory. Maybe that’s nonsense, but I can’t imagine there isn’t a reason for them to do this.

In short, Mario Ball could have been great but the developers just made the wrong choices with this game.

Metroid Prime Pinball Metroid Prime Pinball Rating

This is a great pinball game, from the creators of Mario Ball, so it seems like they learned from their mistakes. It’s a more traditional pinball games with larger boards, and you feel a lot more in control.

The game is based on Metroid Prime, and it’s a nice trip down memory lane for those who played the Gamecube classic. There is a story mode in which you have to collect glyphs by completing tasks such as defeating enemies, complete with level bosses. The universe of Metroid is very fitting for a pinball game, with Morph Ball Samus as the logical protagonist, and boards inspired by spaceships. There’s also a highscore mode with the option to choose separate boards. Another nice extra is the rumble pack that comes bundled with the game, which is noisy but gives the player some extra feedback.

Kirby's-Pinball-Land

Kirby Pinball Rating

This is an awesome pinball game. The boards consist of three smaller screens on top of each other, each of them with different tasks for the player. You can also travel to any of the three main boards, so there is quite a bit of variety. If you let the ball slip on the lower board, you can get another chance of launching it back up (your timing has to be spot on though), which helps to combat frustration. The cheerful Kirby music adds to the fun experience, and the game is quite challenging if you want to beat it completely. Of course the fact that Kirby is a round character, basically a ball, makes him an excellent protagonist for a pinball game.

Pokemon Pinball Ruby and Sapphire

Pokemon Pinball Rating

The best pinball game I have played. Collect all 201 Pokemon by performing set tasks, while playing with different Pokeballs. There are only two main boards, but they are entertaining enough to keep you busy. Besides, there are also some fun bonus stages. The fact that you can collect all Pokemon and look at them in your Pokedex gives you a real incentive to keep playing, and I didn’t stop until I had collected every last one of them.

Top 10 most anticipated games of 2013

2012 may have been a weak year for gaming in some regards, the same can not be said for 2013. There are already a lot of big games to look forward to, some of them coming out as early as next month. Here are my 10 most anticipated games of this year:

Since this game likely won’t come out this year, I haven’t included it in the top 10 list. But I still wanted to mention it, seeing this is my most anticipated game right now.

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes

PlayStation 3, Xbox 360

Most-Anticipated-Games-2013-Metal-Gear-Solid-Ground-Zeroes

This game would have been number one on the list if it would have been confirmed for a 2013 release date. A new Metal Gear game by Hideo Kojima, what more needs to be said? The graphics look very impressive, and the story is sure to be captivating once again.

All right, now on to the top 10 for this year!

Number-1

Animal Crossing: New Leaf

Nintendo 3DS

Most-Anticipated-Games-2013-Animal-Crossing-New-Leaf

My most played handheld game of all time gets a new installment on the 3DS, and this time you’re the mayor of the village. This new version is shattering sales records in Japan, and – if the previous numbers are any indication – will do very well in the west as well. A game that you’ll be able to play for years to come.

Number-2

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

PLAYSTATION 3, XBOX 360

Most-Anticipated-Games-2013-Metal-Gear-Rising-Revengeance

This game had a pretty rough development process. It was being made by Kojima Productions without the help of the man himself, almost cancelled because it didn’t work, and then moved to hack & slash king Platinum Games, who basically started anew. The result looks like it will be over the top and very entertaining.

Number-3

Pikmin 3

Wii U

Most-Anticipated-Games-2013-Pikmin-3

After nine years of waiting, we finally get a new Pikmin game. The Wii U Gamepad and this franchise seems like the perfect match, and the miniature nature worlds look great in HD and with the small depth of field. Plus, Miyamoto is behind this game. Need I say more?

Number-4

Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch

PLAYSTATION 3

Most-Anticipated-Games-2013-Ni-No-Kuni

The charm of Studio Ghibli combined with the the RPG making knowledge of Level 5. This game looks like it’s going to be an absorbing tale with a very appealing visual style. Traditional RPGs haven’t been that common this gen, so it’s good to see a fresh new game in that genre.

Number-5

The Last of Us

PLAYSTATION 3

Most-Anticipated-Games-2013-The-Last-of-Us

Naughty Dog’s new ambitious project is big on story and characters. The atmosphere and survival gameplay look intense, as well as the incredible AI. The mature looking story, interesting setting, breathtaking visuals, and just the sheer amount of polish and perfection Naughty Dog is known for make sure this game appears in the wish lists of many gamers.

Number-6

Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon

Nintendo 3DS

Most-Anticipated-Games-2013-Luigi's-Mansion-Dark-Moon

It’s been over a decade, but we are finally getting a new Luigi’s Mansion game. This time he’s going portable, and he will be visiting several mansions. The original is seen by many as a hidden gem, and one of the most original games in the Mario series. If Nintendo goes the extra mile to make sure this game will be even better, this is to be a sure hit.

Number-7

Bayonetta 2

Wii U

Most-Anticipated-Games-2013-Bayonetta-2

The first one was one of the best games in its genre. It was completely over the top and insane, and had a deep fighting system and a pretty lengthy singleplayer. It’s been several years since the original, so it should be interesting to see what they have done with the series. And it being a Wii U exclusive also makes me curious about Wii U Gamepad integration.

Number-8

BioShock Infinite

PLAYSTATION 3, XBOX 360, PC

Most-Anticipated-Games-2013-Bioshock-Infinite

Now taking place in the air instead of under the sea, this game looks like it will once again deliver in terms of unique gameplay, atmosphere and dystopian world. The game has seen several delays, which hopefully leads to a polished end result.

Number-9

God of War Ascension

PLAYSTATION 3

Most-Anticipated-Games-2013-God-of-War-Ascension

It doesn’t look like it will reinvent the wheel, but the combat looks enjoyable as always. Fighting mythical monsters in an Ancient Greece setting is always welcome. This title explores the origins of Kratos’ anger, which should be interesting as well.

Number-10

Fire Emblem: Awakening

Nintendo 3DS

Most-Anticipated-Games-Fire-Emblem-Awakening

I’ve never played a Fire Emblem game before, but despite this fact – or maybe also because of it – I’m curious about the incoming 3DS installment. Fire Emblem games are generally well received, so this is a good opportunity to try out the series.

Honorable mentions: Beyond: Two Souls, DmC, Dead Space 3, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate, Tomb Raider, Gears of War Judgement, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, Pokemon X / Y

Top 5 games of 2012

2012 has been a mixed year for gaming. While it saw the release of some great games, as well as an entire new console, a lot of games got pushed to 2013, and it also becomes clear we’re approaching the end of a generation. Many of the big releases were sequels, not many new franchises. But, there still was a lot of fun to be had. Here is the top 5 games I enjoyed the most:

There are three conditions for games to be able to appear in this list: the game must have been released in 2012 in Europe, and I must have played it enough in that same year to be able to give an appreciation of it. Also, I’m not counting rereleases, so that excludes games like Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D and the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection.

Top-5-games-2012-NSMBU

Same old, never gets old. The first new Mario game to be released alongside a console since 1996, and the first Mario game in HD. Of course, level design is great as always, and the squirrel suit is a nice addition. Co-op yet again works great and is the perfect blend between chaos, cooperation and comical companionship.

Top-5-games-2012-ACIII

A great new world, a compelling story and plenty of new additions can keep you playing for months. Too bad about the lack of polish and large amount of glitches though. Also, sometimes there’s so much going on on the screen, and the game suffers from a lack of adequate communication. Some necessary information is displayed on the screen constantly, while other, less logical elements aren’t explained at all. But, with its great atmosphere, amazingly detailed setting and fun story line, this is still one of the most impressive games of 2012.

Top-5-games-2012-ME3

Despite the bad ending (haven’t seen the expanded version yet), this is still the best game in the trilogy. The sense of looming danger, of a whole universe that is uniting to stand against the greatest threat of all time, the addictive leveling system, the interesting lore, and the fantastic music, this is a game I won’t soon forget.

Top-5-games-2012-BD

The sleeper hit of the year. A Japanese Gears of War clone, but one with its own identity. The story is surprisingly interesting, and the script is genuinely funny. The trust system is refreshing as well, although voice commands don’t work too great (a good thing you can just use buttons).

Top-5-games-2012-MTOpen

The first Mario Tennis game I played, so I didn’t know wether I’d like it. But I did. The game is very addicting and keeps you busy for a long time, with plenty of unlockables and medals to obtain. Can be frustrating at times though.

Honorable mentions: Kid Icarus Uprising, Resident Evil Revelations, Nintendo Land, Final Fantasy XIII-2
