God of War Ascension Special Edition

God of War Ascension Special Edition
Platform: PlayStation 3
Year: 2013
Region: PAL

God of War Ascension was released in 2013 for PlayStation 3. Three different versions were made available: the regular, a special edition steelbook and a collector’s edition with a Kratos statue and the same steelbook. The version in this article is the Special Edition.

The design of the steelbook takes the minimalistic approach: the famous omega-logo on a plain black background. There is nothing on the back of the steelbook, which is a bit disappointing.

The inside of the case on the other hand does have some artwork on it, which is always nice to see.

The special edition comes with some extra digital content: a dynamic PlayStation 3 theme, an XP bonus for the multiplayer mode, a PlayStation Network avatar pack and a digital soundtrack. Unfortunately, at the time of writing this article, the code is no longer valid. It’s kind of disappointing to see these codes have an expiration date, not to mention it is actually rather short.

The disc also comes with a demo for The Last of Us. Not that useful anymore, but it was probably a cool little extra at the time.

All in all, this is a special edition that doesn’t have a whole lot to offer in terms of physical goods, but since it was meant as a cheaper alternative to a bigger collector’s edition that’s okay, The minimalistic design looks pretty cool (especially with the protective sleeve removed), but the fact that the back of the case is completely empty is a bit disappointing. Also, at the time of release it was pretty overpriced, but now you’ll be able to find it for cheap. To conclude, this one is just for the avid collectors.
