Top 5 Most Anticipated Games of 2020
Alright, first thing to note here: this list is mostly the same as last year’s list. Three of the five titles on our most anticipated list for 2019 appear on this one as well, one of them due to a delay, two only got a release date recently. But this is really the year! Probably.
Regardless, 2020 is looking pretty good already. With the PlayStation 5 on the horizon to release in the holiday season, the PlayStation 4 is still getting some great titles before it is being replaced. And the Switch line up is promising as well, with titles like Bravely Default II, No More Heroes III and more slated for this year. Without further ado, here are our five most anticipated games of 2020.

The Last of Us Part II

Yes, there it is again. In September last year Sony announced the game would release on February 21st, before getting delayed to May 29th a few weeks later. The press also got its hands on the game, and came back impressed. Combat has been improved and expanded upon, with added stealth mechanics and more open areas in multiple-story buildings. Naughty Dog has also ensured killing your enemies feels consequential, even disturbing. Every enemy has a name and expresses emotions, like grief and anger when you kill one of their friends, or their dog, adding to the story driven, realistic nature of the franchise. This will be the biggest game the studio has ever made, and this year, we’ll find out if it’s also the best.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Sequel

While this game has not got an official release date yet, rumors suggest Nintendo has plans to launch the game later this year. A direct sequel to the critically acclaimed Breath of the Wild, we have only seen one trailer for the game so far, in which we see Link and Zelda enter some kind of catacomb where a dark power seems to lurk. What little we’ve seen so far is oozing with atmosphere, and given Breath of the Wild’s great foundation, this could easily become one of the best games of the year… if it does in fact come out this year.

Ghost of Tsushima

Another game that finally got a release date, or at least a release window: summer 2020. We’ve also gotten a new trailer recently showing more of the beautiful scenery seen in the game, such as moonlit fields and snow covered slopes. We also got to see some of the combat possibilities (bombs that can be thrown, burning arrows and blade attacks from your horse). This will be one of the last big first party games on the system, and it appears to going out with a bang.

Animal Crossing New Horizons

This title that was delayed into this year, but it’s coming soon, on March 20. The game now has a full title: Animal Crossing New Horizons, and it will bring some exciting changes to the popular franchise. This installment takes place on a deserted island, and it will introduce crafting and gives you more flexibility over your village and house, such as the ability to manually create footpaths, to create your own ideal place to live. Like with its predecessors, expect to get lost in the game’s world for countless hours, building up your village, fishing, catching insects and collecting bells.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon

The latest installment in the Yakuza series represents a new direction for the long-running franchise. First presented as an April’s Fools joke, it was later revealed that the series’ switch from fighting game to turn based combat was actually a real thing. While some fans remain skeptical of the drastic change, the developers explained that they wanted to try something new (Yakuza 7 is also the first game in the series to revolve around a new protagonist, after wrapping up Kiryu’s story in Yakuza 6: The Song of Life). The game also introduces a new setting, the city of Yokohama. It remains to be seen what the end result will be like, but trying something new and fresh with an existing franchise is always interesting.
