Call of Duty: Black Ops Prestige Edition
With Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Activision started a tradition of releasing a limited edition that includes a fully functional piece of electronics. Modern Warfare 2: Prestige Edition came with a working pair of night vision goggles.
Call of Duty: Black Ops was released in 2010 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. At the time, it was the biggest entertainment launch in history. There were three different editions of the game available for each platform: the regular version, the Hardened Edition and this one, the Prestige Edition, the one shown below.
The fun thing about these kind of editions is that due to their size, gaming stores will want to get rid of their stock at some point, thus offering them for attractive prices of you wait long enough. I bought this one back in 2011 for 50 euros – and what’s hilarious is that this price made it cheaper than the Hardened Edition and even the regular one – which was still 60 euros at the time. Not a bad deal, right?
So let’s take a look. As you might have expected, it comes in a fairly large box. The box has a display window to show off the RC car.
Also included is the steelbook of the game. This is actually the same thing you get with the Hardened Edition, so it’s nice they give you that one as well. The front show the title of the game and the main character.
The back shows the Black Ops emblem.
At the inside of the case there’s some artwork. It also comes with a redeem code which you can use to download stuff for you Xbox Avatar. Nothing too interesting. Also, some multiplayer maps.
Then there’s a paper box with some military medal replica. Nice, but not something I’m going to pin on.
But of course the meat of this edition is the remote controlled RC, which is modeled after the RC-XD from the game. This replica comes with a plastic stand bearing the logo of the game, that can be used to display the car.
The remote has a small screen that directly displays the video transmitted by the car, that has a camera installed on the front. Aside from video, the car also send an audio feed to the controller.
As insane as this collector’s edition is, it has actually been surpassed by now by Call of Duty: Black Ops II’s downright ridiculous Care Package Edition. Still, this one still ranks high on the list of crazy collector’s editions. The remote control car is actually pretty impressive, it works well and the video quality isn’t even that bad. The fact that it’s in color makes it all the more impressive. The remote and car together do take no less than twelve batteries.
Originally, I wasn’t planning on buying this at all, but since I was able to get such a good deal, I decided to get it. Though it’s not like I’m using the RC car on a daily basis, actually, I put it back in the box after a short time. I wouldn’t recommend spending a lot on this unless you’re really interested in the car. It’s also one of those collector’s editions that takes up a huge amount of space. Still, it’s fun to buy one of those crazy things every now and then, especially for the price I paid.
