Octopath Traveler Traveler’s Compendium Edition

Octopath Traveler Traveler’s Compendium Edition
Platform: Switch
Year: 2018
Region: PAL

Released in July of 2018, Octopath Traveler is an RPG developed exclusively for Nintendo Switch, featuring a mix of 2D and 3D art-style. Alongside the regular version, a special edition was released as well, called the Traveler’s Compendium Edition.

As the name suggests, this edition is shaped like a heavy tome. On the cover is the game’s name with golden decorations around the borders.

The box is held shut with a magnet, and folds open along the spine. There are even some decorations on the inside of the case.

One of the best things about this edition is the series of pop-up dioramas that unfold when you open the book attached to the box and leaf through it. It shows a collection of 3D scenes made up of 2D elements, just like the visual style of the actual game. A clever way to translate the distinct look of the game to the presentation of the collector’s edition, and the result looks beautiful.

A second lid can be opened to reveal the other contents of the box. First off, at the bottom of the lid you will find a replica of a leaf coin, the currency in the game. It’s nicely detailed and heavy, made of actual metal, and designed to look old and worn.

Underneath the lid is a space that holds the game itself. There’s an illustration on the inside of the Switch case as well.

Lastly, a folded world map is included. One one side, it shows the world of Orsterra, on the other side an artwork of the eight playable characters.

In conclusion, a very nice bundle with some cool extras. Nothing about it feels cheap or underwhelming, from its sturdy case to the weighty coin replica and detailed pop up book. A great addition to any Switch collection!
