The three most infuriating moments in Call of Duty
Anyone who has played a Call of Duty game on the highest difficulty setting, called Veteran, can attest to the fact that it can be pretty difficult and frustrating at times. Usually you will be able to get past a certain point with a bit of care and patience, but then there are some parts that seem to be constructed for the sole purpose of having the player die as many times as possible. Here are the three most frustrating, anger inducing and aggravating sections of the franchise.
Assault on Matmata
Call of Duty 2
This mission in Call of Duty 2 starts off with a car ride. Suddenly your squad is led into an ambush, and hostiles appear on the rooftops everywhere around the scene – you’re completely surrounded and exposed to enemy fire. And fire they will. Because of their higher position, there are virtually no places to take cover where they cannot hit you. Your main hope are your smoke grenades, but using them means you can’t see the Germans clearly yourself. On Veteran, this mission is pure frustration, and will have you hitting ‘retry’ a lot more than you’d like.
Mile High Club
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Beating Call of Duty 4 on Veteran is not an easy feat. There are multiple frustrating and crazy difficult parts in the single player mode, but none so insane as what they prepared for the ending. After beating the game, there’s one last mission for you to do: fight your way through a private jet filled with heavily armed terrorists and save a hostage. You only have a few flash bangs, a pistol and a machine gun and one minute to accomplish your mission. This means you have to make a perfect run, as even the smallest flaw will cost you either your life or too much of your precious time. It’s trial and error in every sense of the word. Nothing describes our disbelief when we managed to shoot the terrorist after numerous tries, only to be greeted by the message that “True veterans get head shots, not flesh wounds.” In order words, unless you planted a bullet in the guy’s head, it’s game over as well. It’s understandable, but it would have been nice to know beforehand. After that, you have to jump from the plane. We estimated we must have tried it around 125 times before we finally succeeded,
Heart of the Reich
Call of Duty: World at War
Call of Duty: World at War in general, but especially this mission, can be summed up with one word: grenades. Playing on Veteran difficulty not only means that you die almost instantly from bullets, but also that you seem to be made out of some sort of metal that attracts grenades from every corner of the German reich. They are thrown in bunches by every soldier within reach with pinpoint accuracy the instant you take even the slightest moment to recover. This means that you can hardly ever let your health regenerate without being bombarded by an endless stream of tinkling explosives, with corresponding arrows next to their icons pointing in every possible direction. The worst part in the game is when you are storming the Reichstag, and you have to blow up four Flak 88s. You have to play pretty much perfectly in order to get past this part and even then you need large amounts of luck, because there are no checkpoints until after you’ve destroyed the cannons. It’s a notorious mission among those who’ve played it, and the most frustrating part of the entire series.
